Only Children

Due to a chain of events JN will be an only child. I struggle with this on occasion. Luckily I came across and article in Time Magazine, The Only Child: Debunking the Myths and a podcast via NPR, Radio Times, Rethinking 'Only' Children that has helped me come to some peace with this. Is your child an only? If so maybe these items can be helpful to you too.

Cooking and Cleaning

I have a husband who is a great example for my son, he helps around the house all the time. Truth be told he is better at it than I am. It is with his example that my son wants to help around the house all the time. He "helps" cleans and now cook as evident below.

Mad Men

These days my son goes to bed at 8ish and due to long work hours starting very early in the morning so does my spouse. I, however, am not the least bit ready to hit the hay. Sometimes I read, sometimes I watch DVDs. Since it is summer there is not much in the way of new programing for those of us who get our TV programming through an antenna. So via Netflix, the Internet, or Blockbuster I can see what I am missing. Case in point this week while in Blockbuster I saw the box set for Mad Men. This show has garnered Emmy award after Emmy award and it is on AMC, which of course we don't get. So I thought I would give it a try. I'll be darned if I didn't get hooked after the first episode. It is a very dark drama, which I seem to like these days and it is very well written. So if you have a weekend or two to kill pick it up, but if your morals are easily offended you better pass.

RIP Daniel Schorr

I'm a big NPR listener. When I worked and commuted 30 min each way, NPR was always on. Now as a SAHM I can't listen like I use to but I download podcast every day. One analyst I always search out was Daniel. His banter with Scott Simon on Weekend Edition Saturday was both insightful and a pleasure to listen too. He will be greatly missed.
"No other journalist in memory saw as much history as Daniel Schorr," Simon says.

Photoshop Elements

So I was searching around on iTunes the other day and came across this great podcast for teaching basic lessons for Photoshop Elements. It is called Ailbony Photoshop Elements Tips. I have just a simple point and shoot camera and sometimes I would like to enhance or fix some of the pictures I have taken. I purchased PSE last year to do this but the program is so overwhelming. This podcast so far has been great. The lessons are 2-3 min long and focus on one thing. Below is my first attempt at editing a photo.

The changes are subtle, as I only changed our eye colors to make mine more green and his more blue. It was a fun way to play and I look forward to not only learning more from this podcast but also finding one on basic digital photography so maybe my point and shoot will serve me better.

What do you do when the heat index is 110°

So when it feels like 110° in the Texas summers you have to figure out how to keep little ones entertained inside. Even though I do pop in a video sometimes it is my last resort. So the other day while shopping at Big Lots I found this neat combination of Play-Doh w/letter & numbers.

Today when JN got up from his nap we sat down to some fun cool playtime.

Of course I couldn't get by without having a little bit of educational learning take place...

I hope you found a cool way to spend the day!

I am not a crafty person, really, give me a spreadsheet and data and I am a happy camper. I do try and would really like to be I just don't have the "eye" for things. I have though tried my best since having a little one to do some sort of arts and crafts with him when I can pry him away from his Lego's and construction toys. Today was our first adventure into scissors and glue. He had a blast and seemed to catch on to the mechanics of how to work scissors quickly.

Kitchen Gadgets

I am not much of a cook but I try, and during the dog days of summer I do my best to not use the oven so I don't heat up the house any more than the Texas summers do. So I use my Crockpot and George Foreman grill on a daily basis. However, in the mornings I am use not up for much cooking so I am making smoothies. To this end I have found the Kitchen Aid hand mixer. Wow, I love this thing. It is great for making my smoothies without having to pull out the blender and a lot easier to clean up. I have also used it to make Creamy Greek Salad dressing and whip up some yummy mashed taters. Who knows what I will try next.

As I sit here and listen to my child playing with his grandmother and having watched him playing with his other grandparents earlier today I am reminded how important family is. I was lucky enough to have had my grandparents around until the last couple of years. I hope my son will get to enjoy his grandparents for years to come.

Tricycle and Growing

JN's new tricycle finally came in this weekend, yeah!. I got up the nerve to put it together while he was taking a nap. See, JN had a Radio Flyer tricycle that his grandparents had gotten him last year for his birthday and it was great. He tootled around the porches and driveway and had a blast. However, since then he has grown between 2 and 3 inches and it had just become to small, his knees hit the handle bars even when he would push it with his feet. So after much searching I finally found the Radio Flyer Classic Red Dual Deck Tricycle. It is great! I am sure we will be spending many hours outside exploring on this bad boy!

I think he will be happier with the extra leg room!!!

Search Engines

I am trying out Google Chrome as a search engine. I have become tired of IE and its security issues and Firefox is nice but lacks some finish. I have tried Safari but never got used to it so here I am with Google Chrome. I can tell it will be my default browser for Netflix streaming, because it shows movies in wide screen even when not in full screen mode, nice. Anyone else have a preferred search engine, and why?

My husband is a science major, his dad has multiple degrees in science and his brother is a pharmacist so needless to say he encourages all the science things he can with our son. He taught him by the age of 3 the chemical make up of water, H2O or 2 hydrogen's to 1 oxygen, the chemical make up of salt, sodium chloride and the major chemical elements of the body, CHON, standing for carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen. My son can recite these things in his sleep, plus several others. So the other day when it was raining and then stopped R thought he would teach JN a new term, dissipated. So they talked about what it meant and repeated how to say the word correctly and then used it in context many times. Then as all 3 year olds do, got bored and went on to play with his construction toys. So with great delight to R yesterday after it had stopped raining JN turned to daddy and said, "Daddy, the rain has dissipated!" R was beaming!

It is a good thing that he was a science major because I was never into that, JN will learn all the social sciences from me and the hard sciences from his dad.

Today we went swimming for the first time this summer. We did not swim at all last summer, chalk it up to over protective mom. JN had a blast. He stayed on the steps for the most part but did venture out into the middle with a death grip on mom. At the very end he got brave and jumped in and when he finished coughing up all the water  he swallowed said he was all done. It was priceless. We hope to do it again soon, but don't expect any pictures because that would require mom to be in the photo too and that ain't happenin'.

Family Reunion

This last Saturday was the annual Hott Family Reunion. This is a reunion of the descendants of Otis and Dora Hott. This year was both sad and joyous, for this was the first year since my Granddad had passed, Otis and Dora's second of eight children and it was the first year since 1999 that a family member from all 8 children were present. This reunion has been held at my parents house for the last 25 years, whew that's a long time. It was great to see all of my aunts, uncles, cousins and kids.

FW Science and History Museum

Along with our FW zoo membership we have now become members of the FW Science and History Museum. This has been a great investment. JN and I have gone for the last 3 Mondays and we always see something new and exciting. Of course his favorite is the courtyard where he can channel his inner carpenter and plumber skills.

I am a consumer of media, any and all. It doesn't matter if it is movies, TV shows, magazines, books, the Internet anything I love it. I have never been an outdoorsy kind of person, though that is changing now with a little boy who is all about the outdoors, but with the advent of high speed Internet, fiber optic cable bringing UVerse to my parents home and wireless routers, I can get media just about anywhere at any time. However, as said previously I have a very active little boy so I must squeeze in my media time during his naps or after bedtime. This is when I get a chance to read a book, watch one of the many TV shows I keep up with or a movie. I hope in upcoming post to share some of what I have consumed.

Modern Technology

Okay so I bought this iPod Touch last April. I purchased it to be able to read email and Facebook where ever I was in the house. It has turned out to be a life saver for me, not only in terms of keeping up with friends but also with appt via the calendar that syncs to Outlook and many app that I have found, most for free. My 2 favs at the moment are Lose It! and Amazon Kindle. Both have made my life easier and less stressful.

Both Feet

Okay, here we go with my first blog post. First I would like to thank Ardis for showing me the way a blog should be done, easy and just whatever you what it to be and Tuesday for being so open and honest with her blog while going to school and raising an almost 3 year old.

I am not a big writer. I guess I got that out of my system when completing the master and doctorate, then spending 10+ years writing reports for work. So most of my post will be short and just random thoughts I might have through the day. I will post pictures and links when I think they fit and if Ardis will show me how maybe even a play list at the bottom of songs that fit my mood or the post.

So off I go into  uncharted territory for me. If you stumble across this hope you find it entertaining for that is all it is meant to be.
