Full Service Gas Stations

I grew up in a time when there were full service gas stations. For you young folks it was when you pulled up to a gas station and heard a bell ring, and attendant came out and said, "filler up ma'am".

Now we always went to Mathison Gulf on Palo Pinto Street. For years I remember James filling up our family car with gas, washing the windows, checking the oil, tire pressure, state inspections, and just about anything else the vehicle needed.

About the time I got my drivers license was when self service stations were coming on board and not wanting to be anything like my parents (sorry mom) I started filling up myself.

As time as passed  here in the great state of Texas the self service station has gone by the wayside in favor of mega convenient store stations where you can get cappachino with your gas, but I have found a self service station here in Weatherford and HELLO, I now know the joy of not having to get out of my car when it is raining, cold or windy, I don't have to get my hands dirty, wash my windows or worry about skimmers at the pay at the pump credit card readers. Now I can sit in my nice warm car and sing songs with my son and enjoy this luxury for only $2.00 more per fill up. Well worth it in my opinion.

So if you are ever in Weatherford M-Sat stop by Don's Chevron on South Main by Gibson's and enjoy the good ole days. And while your at it mosey over to Gibson's to enjoy some small town dry good's store experience as well. I will blog about that another time.

An AHA moment...

Yesterday was an aha moment for me. See when I stopped working outside the home when my son was born I had this June Clever idea of being a stay at home mom. A spotless house a well behaved child a cooked dinner on the table every night and smiles on every ones faces. Now 3 1/2 years into it I have the shocking reality that the laundry doesn't always get done my child has his own plans for behavior and meals come out of a can or the freezer on occasions and the floors are lucky if they get vacuumed once a week.

Because I had this unrealistic expectations and tried to keep meeting it for so long I realized that my relationship with my son was suffering. I came to this shocking moment yesterday.

See my nice hubby stayed home from work so that I could do some much needed Christmas shopping. I ended up being gone for most of the day. When I returned that evening I found a happy cooperative child.

What had happened? Normally by the end of our days we are both on the verge of tears and gnashing our teeth. After I sat down and listened to their day I was when I had my aha moment. They didn't worry about the laundry getting done the floors vacuumed or meals cooked, they played! Something I think I had lost sight of.

As my son has gotten older he is in need of more and more active input and physical activity, well duh, I should know this being and education major, but I had lost sight of it trying to do it all. So today we played, before we went off to school and we played and ran around after school. He went down for a nap without a fuss, albeit late, but still we have had very few head butting moments and both he an I are much more relaxed.

I know I will need constant reminders to play instead of work, it is just my nature, but in the end we will all be better for it.

Today I felt like this kid and that my son was driving the car. 3 year olds can be so challenging and frustrating and rewarding all at the same time! God give me strength!

Welcome to the 21st Century

Well we finally did it, we finally made the switch from an analog TV to HDTV.  And let me say OMG!!!

I know, I know most of you made the switch many years ago but we just could bring ourselves to spend the money to replace a perfectly good TV. Also, we don't have cable or satellite nor a Blu-Ray player so really there was no need. However with more and more content being shot and displayed in HD and the addition of our new Roku player so we can watch movies without renting, we decided for Christmas we would make the jump and get a new TV.

We had been looking for a while and had settled on the features we wanted and then this last week Best Buy ran a sale we couldn't pass up. It was so easy to set up and the picture, oh my gosh, the picture quality is, dare I say, life changing for watching TV.

Now I know I go on sometimes about my love for technology and if I had unlimited funds would have all the latest and greatest gadgets, that's just me. But this TV and it's ability to show movie quality picture and sound with the push of a button, just about gets me salivating. OK, maybe not quite that.

So I know I did pretty well during the month of Nov with posting often but if you don't see a post from me for a while I will be expanding my beeeehind while propped up on the couch watching The Tudors, Grey's Anatomy, House and a whole lot of Veggie Tales and Mighty Machines with my little one. I am such a bad influence.

Thankful for this email that included this video and that this still happens in a free country.

Merry Christmas to all!!!
Just imagine: you are having your rather un-nutritious, but tasty lunch, while shopping for early Christmas bargains, and, then, suddenly Magic happens.

Giving Thanks #25

Well, today is a hard day to write what I am thankful for because I learned this afternoon that one of my cousins passed away after a car accident this morning. It is very sad when a young, vibrant, sweet, energetic person is taken so unexpectantly. I am reminded how fragile life can be and to tell your family and friends every time you see them that you love them and never take them for granted because you never know when it will be the last time you see them. I am thankful for a large and close extended family that will provide lots of love and support to the family. God Bless them in this time of loss and sorrow. This poem was read at my Pappy's memorial and it says so much and I want to share it in this time of loss:

Miss me, but let me go

When I come to the end of the road
And the sun has set for me,
I want no tears in a gloom-filled room,
Why cry for a soul set free?

Miss me a little – But not for long
And not with your head bowed low,
Remember the love that we once shared,
Miss me – But let me go.

For this is a journey we all must take,
And each must go alone,
It’s all a part of the Master’s plan
A step on the road to home.

When you are lonely and sick of heart
Go to your friends that we know,
And bury your sorrows in doing good works,
Miss me – But let me go.

Well in the words of Gomer Pyle, well GOOOOOLLLYY! I sit down to type my post for giving thanks for this morning and realized that I never posted anything for yesterday. The day was so busy filled with things to do with the hubby and JN and that I just lost track of time. It is so nice to have a full day of things to do outside in this beautiful weather, and honey dos inside and to have somebody to help you. I hope your days are busy, filled with great things to do to with family and friends.

A post on Facebook reminded me of this Thankfulness reminder from Veggie Tales and I just want to share it:

Thank you God for this day,
For the sun in the sky,
For my mom and my dad,
For my piece of apple pie!

For our home on the ground,
For His love that's all around,
That's why I say thanks every day!

Because a thankful heart is a happy heart!
I'm glad for what I have,
That's an easy way to start!

For the love that He shares,
'Cause He listens to my prayers,
That's why I say thanks every day!

Thank you Dad for our day
For our trip to the mall
For the time spent with me
For our big red bouncy ball

For our fun that we had
I'm so happy you're my Dad
That's why I say thanks every day

Because a thankful heart is a happy heart!
I'm glad for what I have,
That's an easy way to start!

For a God that really cares.
'Cause He listens to my prayers,
That's why I say thanks every day!

That's why I say thanks every day!

Freebies, Freebies, Freebies!!! After reading the blog Twice as Nice I found out about the Shutterfly 50 Free Holiday Cards give away. This is great timing as I am brand new to Shutterfly and had been looking at the holiday section trying to decide which one to get. So far I have only ordered prints and photo books, which make great grandparent gifts.

So far after looking I think I like the flat photo cards best. These are my top three designs:

Today is a shout out and thanks to my technical guru Daryll. Hey Daryll if you are reading this you are the BEST!.

See I meet Daryll while working in the Granbury ISD system. I was a diagnostician at the high school and he was the tech guy. We hit it off and soon a great friendship developed. Daryll has taught me lots of computer things and to this day will take my "help desk" calls when I am in a pinch or need some guidance.

This is what happened today when I was upgrading my CPU. Sure enough I got into a spot when I need some help and there he was on the other end of the line. And by my typing this blog post is evidence that his help was right on!!! Thanks again to the Greatest Tech Guy around!

All the cords, GEESH!

Opened up and ready for upgrade

Successful removal of heatsink
New CPU and thermal grease ready

Houston, we have touchdown

Giving Thanks #15

Well,  I fell down on the job yesterday and didn't post what I was thankful for. I did try. I sat down several times with a blank page and just sat. I think I was tring to hard to come up with some earth shattering post when I should try to keep it real. I started this project as a reminder to myself of what I have and to be thankful. So I will try to "keep it real and short".

Today I am thankful for having a good healthcare that let's me see the physician I want and trust. Thanks Dr. G for being such a wonderful caring doc! You Rock!

Today is a carry over from Wednesday's post. Yesterday I found a place where I could sit and watch the classroom without being noticed for a little while. I am so thankful to have a son with such a great imagination.

Every morning when he gets up he ask,"What are we doing today, Mommy?" and if I don't give him the answer he is looking for then he makes up his own day of what he wants to do, so cute. And as the day progress and he is playing or we are driving in the car he will tell me stories of things "he did" or wants to do. Most of these are made up of bits and piece of books we read but he is starting to add his own little flair to them. I could regal you with some of these stories but of course most of them are "you had to be there" type of stories to get the full cuteness of them. The one I will tell you about which happens just about every day is when my in-laws come over for supper and my father in law ask JN "What did you do today?" to which my son starts his reply with every time, "Well, Papa" and then proceed to weave a schedule of events that are no where near accurate of the real day but we all laugh at his imagination. It has become a game with he and his Papa and that is something to be very thankful for.

Museum School logo

Yeah, today is Wednesday, hump day, almost the weekend day, or whatever you call it. For us it is Museum School Day. We are very fortunate the JN has been able to go to this wonderful learning environment. I must say the wait to see if he got in was nail bitting but it was well worth it. This is his first educational experience outside the home and I hope it lays a foundation for a love of learning. We are very thankful for Mrs. Butts and Mrs. Montague and their sweet smiles and open adoration for all of the children.

Happy family

Today is Tuesday and I am very, very, very thankful for that. You see Tuesday is our only day that we do not have a schedule. I never thought that we would have so many things going. So Tuesday is our "free" day. Sometimes we veg out in the house all day depending on the weather. Some days we go run errands and just what ever we feel like doing. Today we went and had holiday pictures made. I try to have studio picutres taken of JN every 6 months and how nice it is that falls around his birthday and Christmas. So today was the day. I must say that his little independent streak showed up and it wasn't the easiest session and his grins were cartoonish but we did get a couple of good shots.

Today I am thankful for coupons and shopping with no assistance.

Since our son was born my husband has afforded me the luxury of going to the grocery store on Sundays while he stays at home with our son. This it a huge relief on my part and for those of you with babies, toddlers or just kids in general you know that shopping with them can be a challenge and forget trying to do coupons or comparison shop.

And speaking of coupons, I never leave home without them. They are wonderful. I go it alone now on shopping for sales and matching coupons with those sales for great savings but at one time I did do The Grocery Game. However, when Kroger left Weatherford I found it no longer worth my time and money. Oh Kroger how I miss you. Okay I digress. Coupons are a wonderful thing and yes they take time and effort to cut out and sort but for me it is well worth my time as a SAHM. I also use the following sites and blogs* to help in my never ending search for deals and coupons;, Smart Source, RedPulm, In Good Cents, Couponing 101, Deal Seeking Mom, and A Full Cup.

*Please note that the blogs are for the North Texas area in relationship to grocery store sales. But I'm sure with a few Google searches you can find some in your area.

Giving Thanks #6 has its good and not so good sides but overall in my life it has been a good thing. When I first started to draft this blog post I had pictures of all the tech things that had made my life easier or "better" but the page quickly filled up with too many pics. So I will just add links as I share why I am thankful for them.

I will start off first with just the basic old computer. I bought my first one with the help of my granddad as I was working on my masters and it had the good old squawking of the dial up modem. But the combination of those two things made my graduate life a little easier and as I progressed from the masters to the doctorate, saved me time and many miles on my vehicles.

I also am thankful for the iPod Touch, that helps me stay organized and in touch with friends, cell phones and the Internet that also help me stay up to date with friends and family, let me post this blog and sit on my butt while my child naps. I am thankful for Netflix and Roku that allow me to more judiciously monitor what my child watches and am not at the whim of the Networks for scheduling. Also for digital cameras that allow me to document many events in our family's lives and share them with family far away. Here are more I can think of but will not bore you with the details Facebook, Skype, Twitter, Amazon,  the KindleNook  and Lose It apps, and WOOT. These are in my life everyday and though I could live without them, I am thankful that I do have them.

Friends are for sure people to be thankful for, whether it is for JN or myself friends make the world a better place.
JN's very first play group. A great bunch of moms!
JN and his playground partner. He's a wonderful boy!
JN and his first "girlfriend".
My best friend. We don't get to talk as often as we would like.
My technology buddy. He taught me a lot.
Our Monday or any day play friends. They are wonderful people!

Grandparents are a wonderful thing. In my mind they are basically parents without rules and who like to play all day. That is one of the perks of being a grandparent. I grew up knowing both sets of my grandparents, one set lived here and even though the other set lived else where my parents made sure I knew about them and that we either talked on the phone or went to go seem them. My son has, in this modern age of mobility where people live far away from where they grew up, the rare treat of having both sets of his grandparents living right here. There is only one day a week that he doesn't see either one or both sets of grandparents. They are wonderful to have around and that makes me thankful for them.

Today I am giving thanks for my son. He is happy, fun, mischievous, curious, energetic, loving, and I could go on and on. But he is currently the center of my world. I am very lucky to be a stay at home mom and get to experience all the wonderful first in his life. Be the one who teaches him the alphabet, numbers, reading, math, manners and again I could go on and on. He stretches my thought process an my patience at times and I am all the better for it! Thank you JN for being such a wonderful son!

Today is the first day of November, a month in which we celebrate Thanksgiving. So in honor of this holiday my goal is to post one thing each day I am thankful for.

Today I will start with the person I am most thankful for my husband! You won't see many pictures of him here because he is a very private person. He is a wonderful husband, father and son. His is fiercely protective of  his family, and works long hard hours so that I can stay home with our son and that he can reap the benefits of his daddy's hard work. He is our rock though all things we do and we are very thankful for him!

So here I am again, 3:30 in the afternoon and my son is napping. I should be doing laundry, vacuuming, mopping, or any other of a 100 house cleaning chores but no I am sitting here on my tush blog surfing and eating bon bon's. Ok, not bon bon's but eating none the less. But the day is not a total loss, JN got to play in a bobcat at his friends house, so he is a happy camper.

Are You Havin' Any Fun?

The other day my hubby was humming a catching tune that I vaguely remember from a holiday commercial last year. When it finally hit me what the song was I started humming/singing it too. It is a catchy song but the words have some meaning and I wonder "Are You Havin' Any Fun?" I have downloaded it to my iPod and play it when I need a reminder to relax.

TONY BENNETT lyrics - Are You Havin' Any Fun?

Hey fellow with a million smackers
And nervous indigestion
Rich fellow, eats milk and crackers
I'll ask you one question
You silly so and so
With all your dough....

Are you havin' any fun?
What y'gettin' out o' livin'?
What good is what you've got
If you're not havin' any fun?

Are you havin' any laughs?
Are you gettin' any lovin'?
If other people do,
So can you, have a little fun

After the honey's in the cone
Little bees go out and play
Even the old grey mare down home
Has got to have hay....HEY!

You better have some fun
You ain't gonna live forever
Before you're old and gray, feel okay
Have your little fun, son!
Have your little fun!

Why do you work and slave and save?
Life is full of ifs and buts
You know the squirrels save and save
And what have they got.....NUTS!

Better have a little fun
You ain't gonna live forever
Before you're old and grey, still okay
Have your little fun, son!
Have your little fun!
Are you havin' any fun?

Who Knew? (diaper post beware)

Turns out has a program called Amazon Mom. Thanks to a post by Couponing 101 I found this program. Please see her post for all the details but sufficed to say I am now saving 50% on the pull ups we use even with sales and coupons I cut out. And, they will be delivered to my door in 2 days at no extra cost. This is great because since we only use the pull ups for nap and night time now I am forever making a run to the store because we are down to our last one or two.

Cha-ching! I see extra buck or iTunes cards in my future with the savings!!!!

Saturdays with Grandpas

One of the fringe benefits of working at the family clothing store was that I was able to eat lunch with my Granddad every Saturday. Starting at about age 16 I would work on Saturdays at the store and promptly at 1 pm Granddad and I would head out for lunch. This was a great treat for me and during the summers I was able to go 5 days a week! This lunch date continued even as I went to college and got a job teaching and no longer worked at the store.

At the same time my dad would eat lunch on Saturdays with his Grandmother (Great Nanny to me). And through a series of events my Great Grandmother passed away and my Granddad retired and remarried so there we were, my dad and I without a Saturday lunch date.

So daddy and I started to eat lunch on Saturdays to keep up the tradition and now that JN has come along he comes too. It is a special treat that we live so close to our parents and JN can have the benefit of getting to know his grandparents so well. I hope that we can keep our Saturday lunch date for a long time!

Do you have any special family time set aside each week?

Dr. Seuss and Family Traditions

Growing up one of my fondest memories is that of my dad reading us a book before bed. Now, my dad is a great storyteller and add the whimsical rhymes of Dr. Seuss and you have a child's delight. Weather it be Green Eggs and Ham, The Cat in the Hat, One Fish, Two Fish, Horton, Sneetches, Lorax, or strolling down Mulberry Street, I looked forward to bedtime.

So when I was teaching and had the opportunity to buy all of my favorite childhood books at a great price I did. I kept them boxed up and waiting until I had my own child to read nap time and bedtime stories too. Through several moves (boy they are heavy) they have finally been open. Though we have had some small board books from Dr. Seuss these are the hardcover, paper page books that we all know and love.

I look forward to many nights of reading to JN just like my dad read to me, even though I know my storytelling is not quite as entertaining. Thanks dad for the great memories and I hope to pass those along.

A "Weighty" Issue

Okay this post is going to be about weight gain and loss so fair warning.

I have had issues with weight since about the time I was 12 years old. I have never really liked exercise, portion control or fruits and vegetables. I do love, meat, potatoes, pasta, sweets, chocolate and sitting on my rear watching TV, movies or reading.

This combination has lead to years of being overweight, a stretch of high blood pressure and meds and just an overall feeling of yuckiness.

I have gotten motivated a couple of times and done WW and exercise and have gained and lost the same 30-40 lbs a couple of times. But when my son turned 3 and I could not keep up with him for very long I decided it was time to change for good.

I don't have the time or the $$$ to do WW or go to a gym so I started to seek out other cheaper alternatives. My first stop was the APP store for my iPod Touch. I found this great program called LOSE IT! You tell it your age, height, current weight, goal weight and how much you want to loose a week. It then calculates how many calories you can have a day to achieve this goal. Best of all it was FREE!!

So Memorial Day weekend I started. I had lost 16lbs as of the 3rd week of August and then stalled out. So I resided myself that I was going to have to start exercising to get off the last 6lbs I want to loose.

Again I searched out cheap alternative and I found it right there in my NETFLIX account. They have these great streaming videos called 10 MINUTE SOLUTIONS. They have variety of these for instant streaming, Pilate, Yoga, Dancing, Toning, etc. They are broken down into five 10 min sessions so I can do as many minutes as I think I can stand and mix and match to my needs for the day.

So far I have lost 1lb in a week, not great but a start and I am feeling much more energized. I am hopeful this pattern will continue and I can set a better example for my son of eating right and getting lots of exercise!!

Ode to Summer

We were supposed to go to Aunt Vickie's house today and feed the longhorns and swim in the pool one last time. However, due to the tropical depression that dumped 5-6 inches of rain the last 2 days it is too muddy to get to the longhorns and the pool is a chilly 79 degrees, burrrrrrr. So as an ode to the last days of summer, here is a pictorial review of JN swimming and a video at the end of his bravery on the diving rock.

The video is about 2 min long and is JN jumping off the rock, many times.
